An overwhelming number of cats are mixes.
After the Meiji era, along with the Westernization of Japanese culture, keeping western cats outside became very popular, and the results of those cats breeding with Japanese cats were the mixes (mixed breeds). After the Pacific War, owning a Western cat became common for ordinary citizens, and mixes spread quickly. The decedents of those cats are now stray cats.
